Intermediate Test - HSK Test - Reordering - Chinese Idioms

This exercise tests your knowledge about Chinese idioms - Chéngyǔ. You are given a sentence with a chinese idiom and you need to determine the correct order of the sentence.
Chinese idioms are expressions with 4 characters and are derived from ancient chinese literature. Their meaning is derived from the myths, stories associated to it. So by just reading the characters the meaning is not obvious or impossible to decypher. One needs to know the story behind the characters before being able to understand the meaning.

How it works You will see a sentence with words in the wrong sequence. You need to drag the words into the correct sequence. If you have difficulties in completing the question, you can click on the hint button. But we would recommend that you don't if you want to keep the exercise challenging.

Advanced Test - HSK Test - Reading - Deja vu

This HSK advanced reading test is about Déjà vu.
A research shows that if you look at a Chinese character for more than 20-30 seconds, you will find that this character looks familiar but you can’t recognize it any more. They call it "orthographic satiation". More over, for words as simple as 日 and 月, it takes more time to feel the word – Déjà vu, but for words like 明, it takes less time to feel un-recognizable.

We provide you with four different chinese research articles related to the subject. And then we ask you questions about the articles. So read the articles carefully, but not for too long as you might suffer Deja Vu!

Advanced Test - HSK Test - Reading - Chinese Classic Novels

This HSK advanced test is about the four greatest classic novels of all time. Any chinese will know about these novels and has read them at some stage in their lives. What about you? Have you heard about them? If you have then that will help you do better in this HSK reading test.

We have taken a short passage from each book and we ask you questions about each passage.

So that you know the four greatest chinese novels in chronological order are: - Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Chinese: 三國演義; pinyin: sān guó yǎn yì) (14th century) (more recently translated as, simply Three Kingdoms)
- Water Margin (Chinese: 水滸傳; pinyin: shuǐ hǔ zhuàn) (also known as Outlaws of the Marsh) (14th century)
- Journey to the West (Chinese: 西遊記; pinyin: xī yóu jì) (16th century) also known as Monkey King

Advanced Test - HSK Test - Reading - Chinese Dress Qipao

qípáo (旗袍) is a body-hugging one-piece dress for women. It can display Chinese women’s softness and beauty. Qipao is elegant and gentle. Unlike other costumes, Qipao is simple and complicated: simplicity in its features but complication in design. When wearing Qipao, women should pay attention to the match as a whole; particularly middle-aged or elderly women should do so. As the old Chinese saying goes, “Food is the first necessity of people”, paying visits to your kitchen several times a day is inevitable, which makes knowing the chinese words for kitchen appliances an essential need. Beginner Test - Memory game - Clothes

Another memory game to exercise your memory. Memorise the chinese words for different types of clothes like trousers, shirt, shoes, skirt, sweater...

How it works You will see a set of cards with the face down. You need to use your mouse and click on one of the cards. After that you need to click on another card. If the cards turns to green that means you have found two cards that match. This means that you have matched an image against its chinese word in Hanzi-Image mode or that you have matched the chinese character against its chinese pronunciation if you are playing in Hanzi-Pinyin mode. There is a time constraint on this exercise so try to be quick!

Beginner Test - Learn Pinyin and Tones - Discrimination of sounds - Test 1

The first test in our series 'Learn Pinyin and Tones - Discrimination of sounds' that test your knowledge of pinyin and the ability to recognize different tones.

In mandarin chinese it is not only difficult to distinguish tones. Certain syllabes in pinyin sound quite similar. Take as an example 知道 - zhī dao - to know and 迟到 - chí dào - to be late. To the untrained ear they sound the same but actually they have a slighly different sound. That's why it is important that you try this exercise and see whether you can differenciate the different sounds in pinyin.

How it works: You will hear the sound of a word in chinese and you have to select the right pinyin spelling from a number of options. For each question only one option is correct.

Advanced Test - HSK Test - Filling the gap - GroBer Rauber

This HSK filling the gap advanced test is a short story based on the movie - Grober Rauber. The main emphasis of this test is to examine your knowledge of measure words. It is not easy as you might think so don't underestimate this test!
In Honeniba village Rauber Hotzenplotz stole his grandmother's coffee machine. Kasperl and Seppel are trying to catch him so that they can give back the coffee machine to grandma.
There are a total of 15 questions. In each you need to choose the right words and drag them to the appropriate section of the text.
