Beginner Test - Learn Pinyin and Tones - Discrimination of tones - Test 2

The second test in our series 'Learn Pinyin and Tones - Discrimination of tones' that tests your knowledge of pinyin and the ability to recognize different tones.

In mandarin there are 4 basic tones and a neutral tone.
The first tone is a high level tone with an horizontal pitch. The second tone is, also called rising tone that has a sound that rises from mid-level to high. The third tone is a dipping tone that starts mid-low, lowers to the bottom of your voice and then followed by a rising pitch. Finally, the fourth tone, perhaps the easiest of all to recognise(in pair with the first tone) has a sharp falling pitch. It starts high and ends low.

The more you practice at recognizing tones the more you realise how tricky it can be to distinguish the third tone from the second tone.

How it works: You will hear the sound of a word in chinese and you have to select the right pinyin spelling with the right tone from a number of options. For each question only one option is correct.

The second test in our series 'Learn Pinyin and Tones - Initials and Finals' that tests your knowledge of pinyin and the ability to recognize different Initials and Finals.

Initals and finals are the most important elements of chinese pinyin. Nearly every single word in mandarin is composed of a initial followed by a final. Because some initial have deceivingly simlar sounds, it is important that you practice as much as you can on how distinguish their sounds.

Pinyin is the most commonly used Romanization system for Standard Mandarin. Literally, it means to spell sound. It was designed to look up unknown Chinese characters in dictionaries, as well as teaching Chinese learners the standard pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese. Once you’ve learnt Pinyin, you will be able to pronounce any of the words in Mandarin using a Chinese dictionary.

The aim of this test is to examine your knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin. The exercise set includes 15 questions, and each one contains a Pinyin sound with one relevant Pinyin character. Please listen to the sound and select the most appropriate answer from A, B, C and D. Repeat the exercise as much as you can. It will help you to learn how to distinguish the different pinyin tones.

Advanced Test - HSK Test - Multiple Choice - Test 2

HSK is a standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native Chinese speakers.
