The first test in our series 'Learn Pinyin and Tones - Initials and Finals' that tests your knowledge of pinyin and the ability to recognize different Finals.

Initals and finals are the most important elements of chinese pinyin. Nearly every single word in mandarin is composed of a initial followed by a final. Because some initial have deceivingly simlar sounds, it is important that you practice as much as you can on how distinguish their sounds.

Pinyin is the most commonly used Romanization system for Standard Mandarin. Literally, it means to spell sound. It was designed to look up unknown Chinese characters in dictionaries, as well as teaching Chinese learners the standard pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese. Once you’ve learnt Pinyin, you will be able to pronounce any of the words in Mandarin using a Chinese dictionary.

The aim of this test is to examine your knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin. The exercise set includes 15 questions, and each one contains a Pinyin sound with one relevant Pinyin character. Please listen to the sound and select the most appropriate answer from A, B, C and D. Repeat the exercise as much as you can. It will help you to learn how to distinguish the different pinyin tones.

Beginner Test - Chinese Vocabulary - Human Body

This test examines your knowledge of chinese names for body parts. Learn the chinese words for hand, leg, foot, mouth, eyes, legs, toes, nails, ...

The way this test works is: you are presented with a chinese word and four images and you will also hear the pronunciation of the word in chinese. Based on what you hear and what you see you need to select the correct image. Even if you don't know the word at the beginning, don't worry, you will get immediate feedback on whether your option is correct or not. If you get a low score then you should repeat the test again. You will see that the more you repeat the test the better your score will be.

Beginner Test - Memory game - Colors

Do you know what is 白色? Or 绿色? Do you know how to say the sky is blue in chinese? If you already tried the test then consolidate your knowledge of the chinese names for colors with this memory game.

How it works You will see a set of cards with the face down. You need to use your mouse and click on one of the cards. After that you need to click on another card. If the cards turns to green that means you have found two cards that match. This means that you have matched an image against its chinese word in Hanzi-Image mode or that you have matched the chinese character against its chinese pronunciation if you are playing in Hanzi-Pinyin mode. There is a time constraint on this exercise so try to be quick!
