在中国大部分地区,风水学十分盛行,抛开其中的唯心的成分来说,在选择生存和居住环境的过程中,风水学发挥了不可忽视的作用。

跟北方洛阳、关中等地不同,南方许多地方土薄石多水位高,“洛阳铲”无用武之地,当地盗墓贼“因地制宜”,经过长期不断摸索总结,形成一套觅宝、识宝的方法和技巧。湖南学者刘鸿伏先生与民间古玩文物贩子打交道多年,借机了解、研究解放前长沙周围地区的盗墓贼的办法和技术,归纳为“望”、“闻”、“问”、“切”四字诀。
