亚伯兰对上帝的信仰是无条件的，对上帝的神谕的信服也是无条件的。亚伯兰信悦上帝的话，上帝便以此为义。不能生育的撒莱看见丈夫因为没有后代而痛苦，便起了怜悯之心，决定按祖先的习俗行事。根据希伯来人祖先的习俗，不能生儿育女的妻子应该给丈夫找个妾，丈夫和这个妾生下的儿子可以成为合法的继承人，享有全部长子权。撒莱选中了自己的埃及使女夏甲给亚伯兰作妾…夏甲很快就生产了，果然是个儿子，亚伯兰就按天使的意思取名叫做以实玛利。以实玛利这个名字意思是“神听见”。那年亚怕兰已经86岁。
